Running toward the light.

It’s practically Summer here in the southwest, we seem to skip Springtime. And what’s that have me doing? Run, run, running my winter coat away!

But, of course.

I love to slack off in the winter (okay, really I hate that I am slacking off in the short cold days but cannot seem to stop myself), but come Spring I grab my shoes with vigor again. I start looking at races, calculating how I can afford to sign up for them, which training plans I want to follow, read runner’s blogs with earnest, inventory whether I need new shorts or shoes and do research on top recommendations even though I ALWAYS buy Brooks, find myself grabbing Runner’s World and Trail Runners magazines in the grocery store line, start pestering friends to please come for a short run with me, and talk incessantly about running to strangers, family, and friends who don’t care about running, well,  about running.

Weeeee!!! Yay! Yippy!

So this year so far I have signed up for four races in the next two months:

  • 5k – Miles for Smiles in less than 2 weeks

  • 10k – Cherry Garcia in 4 weeks

  • 5 Mile – Golden Gate Trail Run on 7-14

  • Half-Marathon – Napa to Sonoma Wine Country on 7-15

Yes, you see correctly there. The last two are back-to-back. 5 Mile trail race near San Fransisco on a Saturday and a Napa to Sonoma Half the next morning. Should be, um, interesting.

One is road, one is trail.

One is flat, one has a 100 ft gain in first 1.5 miles.

One is vineyards, one is oceanfront forest.

One is slower, one is a good chip pace.


I love a good challenge. The 5k and 10 I am throwing in as part of my training regimen. The 5 Mile got thrown in for fun. The Half was always a goal. The Napa to Sonoma is a Destination Race that sells out each year on the very first day registration opens. I have been wanting to do this race for years. This year I got in in time. I have several other races I want to sign up for this summer as well. There is a dirty 10k that I hear is super fun in the foothills of the Sandias, I would love to do the Duke City Half again this October, and I kinda want to go crazy and do the world’s toughest 10k up the Sandias. A friend also just asked if I wanted to do the winter quad race as a team, which combines 4 sports in one race. Signing up for that could help cure my winter slack off hopefully.

Every year I say (to myself) I am going to do several races but often just train hard for one. Money is usually the factor, since it can add up, signing up for multiple races or long distance races. Then I look back the next year disappointed I didn’t try to do more. I am making this year the year to squeeze in all the races I can. Part of my push is also that I will be graduating next Spring and likely moving on the greener (pun intended) pastures. So I want to do as many of these desert runs I have been eye balling for several years as I can before I move.

Another thing I am setting summer goals for is backpacking….but that’s a whole other story for another day.
